In the dead of winter, investigative reporter Janne Vuori sets out to uncover the truth about a mining company, whose illegal activities have created an environmental disaster in a small town in Northern Finland. When the company’s executives begin to die in a string of mysterious accidents, and Janne’s personal life starts to unravel, past meets present in a catastrophic series of events that could cost him his life. A traumatic story of family, a study in corruption, and a shocking reminder that secrets from the past can return to haunt us, with deadly results.
The Mine is another beautifully written and absorbing read from the Orenda books stable – it is not a long read but it is an extremely compelling one. Conspiracy and corruption in spades here and our main protagonist Janne has his work cut out for him in unravelling the truth behind The Mine, assuming he can stay alive long enough.
I adored the sense of place that Antti Tuomainen brings to this book, descriptively speaking it is intense and gorgeous, one of those stories that absorbs you into its vortex for the time you spend reading it. Whilst not usually a huge fan of conspiracy in novels this one engaged me utterly – I was drawn to Janne and his determination in the face of difficult circumstances and the author keeps things moving along at an addictive pace.
The Mine would make for brilliant tv incidentally – that thought struck me several times whilst I banged through the read (on Saturday as it happens nothing like doing these things last minute!) I can see it making an authentic, chilling and atmospheric series in the spirit of such things as The Bridge – if wishing made it so.
Overall a terrific read. Another top pick from Orenda. Recommended.

Great review! I’m really curious about this book, would you say it’s a mystery or more thriller? I have only read The Bird Tribunal by Orenda but I really liked it. I’ve been considering requesting this one as well. Also have Mountain in my Shoe but haven’t read it yet.
