Latest Reads: Survivors G X Todd.

There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who hear voices, and those who want to silence them.

Pilgrim is a man with a past he can’t remember. When he wakes alone in a shallow grave, there is a voice in his head that doesn’t belong to him. It explains who he is and what he’s done. It tells him he has one purpose: to find a girl named Lacey.

As Pilgrim is drawn north to Missouri in search of Lacey, he must also travel back to where it all began – to those he left behind. War is coming, and Pilgrim is going to need all the allies he can get.

So we’ve come to book 3 of 4 in the Voices series and I genuinely don’t know how I’m going to wait for the finale, although conversely I don’t want it because then it will be done. I am seriously conflicted…

This has hands down been my favourite series in many years, the post apocalyptic setting is palpable the characters are incredibly real and the whole thing so far has been a masterclass in superb storytelling. The writing is sublime, beautiful, totally immersive, involving to the point of genuine obsession, I do simply live in that world while I’m reading it..

The end of Hunted was a pitch perfect set up for the sure to be heart wrenching final novel, so of course in true real writerly tradition the author makes us wait. Survivors takes us back to Pilgrim, to his journey before the cornfield and Lacey, it explains many things, foreshadows others, makes you look at events in the previous two books with new eyes and has a fair few jaw dropping moments.

In a lot of ways this is true superhero origin stuff, adding complex and intelligent context to the story so far. It is simply another example of why Ms Todd is the real thing, I’ve read enough in my lifetime to have faith that I know it when I see it. Well here it is.

The end brings us back to that moment we all fist pumped the air in Hunted and that moment from a different perspective still has all the power it had and then some because now NOW you know things you didn’t before. Be wary. I feel like a storm is coming…

Pitch perfect in every way. I literally have no downside to give you.

Highly Recommended.
