An elderly local artist plunges 100 feet to her death at an overstretched London hospital and the police immediately sense foul play. The hospital cleaner, a Syrian refugee and a loner, is arrested for her murder. He protests his innocence, but why has he given her the story of Aladdin to read, and why does he shake uncontrollably in times of stress? Judith Burton and Constance Lamb reunite to defend a man the media has already convicted. Together they uncover not only the cleaner s secrets, but also those of the artist s family, her lawyer and the hospital.

I was a huge fan of The Pinocchio Trial so was looking forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint.

I love a good legal thriller and Abi Silver writes so well with an often speculative eye and has created a quietly dynamic duo in Burton and Lamb who are highly engaging in very different ways.

The plot twists and turns beautifully and the narrative explores some socially relevant themes. The supporting cast for this particular mystery are all cleverly divisive and the ultimate resolution is unpredictable making this a bit of a page turner.

Overall another brilliantly addictive read from Abi Silver. I’m really looking forward to more from the world of Burton and Lamb.
